Industry leaders gathered in Ottawa to explore the future of emergency management and climate adaptation in Canada

Ottawa, Ontario (October 3, 2024) – The inaugural Canadian Emergency Preparedness and Climate Adaptation Convention (CEPCA), organized by dmg events, concluded in Ottawa with over 2,000 attendees from across Canada, making the convention the largest national event ever planned in emergency preparedness. The event, held at the Shaw Centre from September 24 to 26, brought together emergency management experts for dynamic discussions and welcomed numerous exhibitors aimed at fostering collaboration and breaking down silos in emergency response across the country.

“A recent poll from Nanos Research found that Canadians want more action on disaster response and relief which supports the need for this nation-wide platform that united stakeholders from across the country in their mission to create more resilient and innovative approaches to emergency management and climate adaptation,” said Nick Samain, Senior Vice President, dmg events. “We are incredibly pleased with the calibre of speakers and industry experts who came to Ottawa to build networks and share expertise across interprovincial borders.”

Notable highlights from CEPCA 2024 included:

  • Over 90 expert speakers addressed major themes during the strategic conference, including the future of Canada's disaster resilience framework, innovative and emerging climate technologies, enhanced emergency response efforts and knowledge exchange across provinces.

  • The Technical Theatres focused on key themes including disaster response and recovery, wildfire and flood management, climate adaptation and innovation in Canada. Discussions included:

    • Fostering resilient communities through urban design

    • Protecting Indigenous communities, wildfire and flood emergency management strategies

    • Implementing Canada’s national adaptation strategy through climate data

    • Incident Command Systems and emerging technologies
  • More than 50 exhibiting companies presented cutting-edge technologies and innovative products and services in the industry. Attendees engaged with interactive displays including practical, affordable and scalable solutions shaping the future of effective and sustainable disaster risk reduction, emergency management and climate adaptation.

  • The event also offered multiple opportunities for attendees to connect and learn, including a networking reception hosted by KPMG on September 25, the Canadian Journal of Emergency Management Capstone Policy Workshop and the DRI Canada Crisis Communications Interactive Workshop.
